sharp the Ossipe Temple 65 and the City of Valdosta kicked off the annual Greater Valdosta Community Christmas Parade a much anticipated tradition in Winnersville. A number of spectators were overheard saying the parade was just what they needed to get in the holiday spirit. The nearly 80 minute long parade, which snaked its way along Patterson Street to Valdosta's historic downtown area, started near the Valdosta Lowndes County Library, led by area firefighters, as well as law enforcement officers. The grand marshal was Sam Allen, the beloved recently retired superintendent of the Valdosta City School System. Children and parents squealed with delight as Elmo and the Cookie Monster, Diego and Dora the Explorer, Daisy Duck, the Big Bad Wolf and the Three Little Pigs, Minnie Mouse and Mickey Mouse, Kermit the Frog, and Winnie the Pooh passed by in a large group. More squeals could be heard as that sneaky old Grinch hitched a ride on the rear of a truck. As to be expected, Saturday's parade boasted everything a parade should have performances by both the Marchin' Cats of Valdosta High School and Lowndes High School's Georgia Bridgemen; a number of beauty queens, boy scouts, girl scouts, shriners, churches, businesses, civic organizations, actors, martial artists, cheerleaders, gymnasts, and day care centers; Mayor John J. Fretti; and a grand finale by Santa Claus. Riding on a horse drawn carriage, sponsored by The Valdosta Daily Times, the jolly old elf waived to young and old and in between as he completed his journey through the city. Just like in Clement Clarke Moore's popular story "Twas the Night Before Christmas his dimples were merry, his eyes twinkled, his cheeks were like roses, his nose was like a cherry, he was dressed in fur from his head to his foot, and his beard was as white as snow not that most Southerners know anything about snow. He wished everyone he saw a Merry Christmas. He smiled, gave a nod. And before he drove out of sight, he promised to return on Christmas Eve in his sleigh pulled by his nine reindeer, the most famous being Rudolph.
