"I meet the most incredible people. I visit the most wonderful cities. I'm just a little girl from a little town in western Massachusetts. I have no special skills. I'm so blessed."She's also so modest. She had worked at Filene's in high school and intended to be a buyer at the store after college. But the Neiman's field trip changed that plan. Two months after graduating college, she got a job offer from the Bal Harbour store."I figured I'd be a department manager, what with my new degree and all," says Johnson, 50.Instead, she spent her first year on the showroom floor, selling dresses, shoes and accessories. She later moved to men's sportswear, then was promoted to manager of the Sports Shop, which featured women's designer sportswear."Calvin Klein and Donna Karan were huge at that time," she recalls. It was exciting work for a young fashionista but her dream still was to be a buyer. The longed for call to report to Neiman's headquarters in Dallas came in 1982. She was appointed traveling assistant to the handbags buyer. She also took courses in executive development, and two years later found herself teaching the class."It was amazing. I'm so blessed. Mr. Stanley would come in and talk to us," she says, referring to Stanley Marcus, the company president who died at age 96 in 2002."He would joke that nobody needs what we sell. They just want it. We must understand the wants and desires of the luxury market. We're selling more than goods. We're selling an experience."Johnson finally became a buyer of girls' sportswear in 1985. "It was when little girls first wanted to look like mini moms. It was a very fun time in children's fashion."It also was a time when romance was in the air for Johnson and David Gattman, an assistant buyer at Neiman's.Liverpool v WolvesWelcome to Wags and Stags where we pit the Barclays Premier League's perfect pairings against each other as they represent their respective clubs in our fun filled game. We've trawled squads around the country to select the Premier League stars
