Construction will begin in the next six weeks. That when site preparation begins, as well as construction of new temporary building to accommodate buses. After that, processes begin to bid out the permanent structures. The project is complicated because construction must take place around Amtrak existing tracks. However, officials estimate the new transportation hub will be completed in the next couple of years. That means that the Greyhound Bus Station, which currently sits across from City Hall, will be closed, and relocated a few blocks down the street. The Intermodal Transportation Center will be located between Morris Avenue and Railroad Reservation in downtown Birmingham. The project was started and stalled by former Birmingham Mayor Larry Langford. Birmingham Mayor William Bell had to convince the federal government to replace a 13 year old copper domed central station because the new building could be expanded, but the domed building could not.Recently released 3 D renderings show what the Birmingham Intermodal Facility and Transportation Hub will look like."This new building with the local bus system will allow the riders to wait inside. They will be covered from the weather. They have electronic signs that will tell them when to expect their bus," said Sherri Nielson, Capitol Projects Manager for the Mayor Office.Nielson said riders will experience greater convenience, news stands,
