Loehmann, who almost always dressed in basic black, paid the stores cash for their out of season designer wear and used her bargain booty to stock the discount store in Brooklyn that bore her name.Eventually, Loehmann's expanded into a chain of 85 stores that includes six in Florida. The discounter of high quality apparel also pioneered what has become the rapidly developing off price industry.Fifty years after Loehmann began her bargain buying, Sue Goldstein, a divorced mother of one, scoured Dallas area malls and shopping centers, determined to stock her closets and home with high quality products at bargain basement prices. What she found helped her develop a list and rating system of 124 discount, off price and outlet warehouse stores in the Dallas area that was published as the first Underground Shopper, a guidebook to discount shopping.Hundreds of thousands of copies later, Goldstein and several family members and friends have written similar guidebooks for a dozen other cities. Goldstein, now a public relations consultant in suburban Fort Worth, Texas, also has compiled several other road maps to bargains on everything from mail order purchases to eligible bachelors.Thanks to Goldstein, Loehmann and other retail innovators, consumers don't have to pay full retail price for anything if they know where to go to find bargains and how to avoid the hidden
