The participants didn't have to travel across the Atlantic to experience the African culture though. A bus took them only as far as the Farmington Valley Arts Center, where they spent the day learning about African art and music. A group formed, the money was raised and the beginnings of the Amistad Center for Art Culture began. And on Saturday, hundreds celebrated its 25th anniversary at the Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford. Buxton's appearance is part of the library's guest artist series. He will give a slide lecture on Saturday and conduct a workshop on March 13. The 150 object exhibit includes works of art from the Sub Saharan cultures and includes sculpture and masks from Western Africa, costumes from the Yoruba, Dan and Mende, and royal thrones and seating.
